Cheap Game Used – Andy Pettitte
Note: This is one of three cards I am trading that haven’t gotten reviewed yet.
Player’s Name: Andy Pettitte
Player’s Position: P – Starter
Player’s Current Team: New York Yankees (Pictured with the Houston Astros)
Price I Paid for the Card: I paid $1.99 on eBay .
Set it’s from: 2006 Topps Allen and Ginter’s
What it’s Worth: It is listed in Beckett as a minor star and set at $10. As you can see you can get it on eBay for much less.
Why I like this card: This is just a wacky card. I like the way it’s a card within a card. The mini card which holds the fabric is encased in a thicker card which has plastic over the center to keep the mini card in. It does have a hole in ther center of the plastic so you can feel the jersey. I never collected the Ginter se, basically because it was too expensive for me. But I do like the olde time design. As far as Pettitte goes, I liked him as a Yankee and could understand why he went to the Astros, and I can even overlook the steroids. He’s just such a likable guy. He is one of the few if not the only superstar, who actually said, that he took steroids. Giambi never actually said it, although he did apologize for it. I have to say personally I don’t care about the steroids. I think it’s a fantastic waste of money for a country which is in trillions of dollars in debt, to host witch hunts as to who did and who didn’t. You want to ruin your later years for glory now, go for it. Baseball should just open it’s doors. Unfortunately we have to think about kids. Since they do emulate the players, and parents are relying on TV more and more to “keep the kids busy”, they are the ones getting hurt. The players will be fine, they can posture all they want but if it became legal to use HGH, there wouldn’t be a player not on it.
Why it’s a Cheap Hit: Looking at his stats, did you know in his 13 year career only once did he fail to get at least 12 wins? That was only because he missed half a season. He is 201-113 overall, which puts him 34th all time. Sure, he will never get to 300 wins, has a career ERA of 3.83 and a WHIP of 1.35, but there wasn’t a better winner on your staff in the mid 90s than Andy. To get this one for under 2 bucks is just great.
Will it Ever be Worth Anything More than a common?: The steroids thing is going to hurt him long term and even by the grace of Babe Ruth, he gets to 300 wins he may still not get into the Hall because of the ‘roids. He will forever be a common in the sea of game used.
