Bad Hits

Cheap Game Used – Dave Winfield

Player’s Name: Dave Winfield

Player’s Position: OF

Player’s Current Team: None – Pictured with the New York Yankees

Price I Paid for the Card: $0.99 purchased on eBay.

Set it’s from: 2005 Leaf Certified serial numbered 63/100

What it’s Worth: Beckett has it listed as $8 and is considered a minor star, but as you can see it can be purchased for much less on eBay.

Why I like this card: This is another one of those Hall of Famer’s game used jersey cards I have been trying to find.  What initially drew me to the card is that it’s a picture of Winfield in a Yankees jersey (my favorite team) and it even had a pinstripe.  The picture on the card is funny because when you think of Winnie, you imagine a nice swing and maybe even a homer run.  In this picture it looks like he just took a called third strike and is about to argue with the ump.  What a strange picture to select for a card of a Hall of Famer.  Even though many people don’t consider him to have earned his way into the Hall, he does have over 450 homers (30th of all time) and over 3100 hits (19th of all time).  Also of the 10 most similar batters 8 of them are in the Hall and 2 of them deserve to be (Dawson and Palmeiro).  I have always been fascinated by Winfield because of this fact, he was the only player selected in four professional drafts. In 1973 he was darfted by the San Diego Padres (MLB), Atlanta Hawks (NBA), Utah Stars (ABA), and the Minnesota Vikings (NFL).  Another fun fact was that he never spent a day in the minor leagues.

Why it’s a Cheap Hit: $0.99 for a swatch of a Hall of Famer! To think someone spent over $100 for a box of 2005 Leaf Certified and got 4 autographs or game used cards. So in essence this card should be worth $25 Since you have to go on the assumption that the other cards in the box are worthless.  But I waited until he put it on eBay with no reserve and pounced on it.  That is the sad state of the industry where I can get HOF jersey cards for under $2.  So knowing that how much are single base set cards really worth?  As a collector of cards, I love the fact that material cards are so cheap.  If however I was in this for making money I would be quaking in my boots right about now.

Will it Ever be Worth Anything More than an Unlisted Star?: He’s done all he could.  He just wasn’t a fan favorite and I guess that’s why he will always be in the minor star catagory.

  1. Wow….just how many game-used and autos are in your collection? Certainly way more than I have. Nice looking card of a player I never really liked.

  2. I have more game used than a lot of people, enough to keep this site going for at least two years. It’s funny, he was so much better than Mattingly but he was never liked. Not even by Yankee fans.
