Bad Hits

Bad Game Used – Juan Gonzalez

jaungonejersey.jpg

Player’s Name: Juan Gonzalez

Player’s Position:OF

Player’s Current Team: None – Team on card is Texas Rangers

Price I Paid for the Card: $0.25 + shipping on eBay.

Set it’s from: 2002 Upper Deck Ovation

What it’s Worth: It is listed as a common and worth $10, however as you can see on eBay its running about $0.25.

Why I like this card: I bought this card because I like Juan Gonzalez. Sure he faltered late in his career but for a long time in the mid 90’s he was a constant threat to break the RBI record. I seriously felt as though he would be a Hall of Famer in the early part of his career. I guess there is a part of me, in hindsight, that thinks maybe some of this was steroid fueled. Really though, you still have to hit the home runs. He still has a shot to make the Hall, although I think it’s a long shot. What makes it close is the 2 MVPs. Also look at the picture, is it me or does Juan look really old in this picture, I actually had to do a double take because it simply didn’t look like him.  What’s the deal with the hands around the bat?  I don’t know about you, but when I used to hit, I was always taught to actually hold the bat with both hands, it makes it easier to swing the bat, you don’t have to worry about it falling out of your hands that way.

Why it’s a Bad Hit: I just don’t think that Juan ever got the respect he deserved. I mean he was a two time MVP, two of the 10 most comparable players on Baseball-Reference are Hall of Famers, but sadly I don’t think that he will ever make it. The fact I got this for 25 cents proves that he is no longer a sought after card commodity. He should have cut his losses in 2002 and left a the top of his game. Instead he stayed around way too long and I think in the end, those final few years led him to bad hit status.

Will it Ever be Worth Anything More than an Unlisted Common?: Maybe, I think he deserves a shot at the Hall, and if he makes it, the card might go up in value. His 434 home runs and 2 time MVP award winner makes him intriguing, but he will probably come up short.
