Player’s Name: AJ Burnett

Player’s Position: P

Player’s Current Team: Toronto Blue Jays

Price I Paid for the Card: $1 at a card show in Freehold, NJ in 2000.

Set it’s from: 2000 Fleer Showcase

What it’s Worth: It is listed as a common and worth $10, however on eBay its running about $15.

Why I like this card: When I bought this card I thought that he had all the makings of a great pitcher. He was loaded to the brim with potential strikeouts, and I was right he throws a ton of strikeouts. The problem was, and it’s pretty common with flame throwers, is that his ERA and WHIP were always high. His win percentage while usually above the 0.500 mark, is usually not much higher than that mark. Currently he is with the Blue Jays, after having a fantastic contract year in Florida. However, he is back to his usual self, last year he went 10-8 with an ERA of 3.75 and a WHIP of 1.189.

Why it’s a Bad Hit: In 2000 this may have been a great hit, because he was at the beginning of his career and showed so much brilliance in the minors and sparks of it in the majors. He is still young relatively speaking at 30 years old, so there is always a chance that he can turn it around. I just think he is an average pitcher though. An average pitcher on an average team. Even if he were to have gone to a good team, his numbers may skew but not much better than he currently is. He has never been a smart pitcher, instead relying on his above average arm to strike out players, he can only do that for so long, before his fastball gets slower and he can’t get players out.

Will it Ever be Worth Anything More than an Unlisted Star Common?: No, he doesn’t have Cy Young material in him and he has never appeared in n All Star game, he just doesn’t have anything that would merrit this card going up. It iwll be a $10 card forever.
