Bad Game Used – Jason Bay

jbay08gu.jpg

Player’s Name: Jason Bay

Player’s Position: OF

Player’s Current Team: Pittsburgh Pirates

Price I Paid for the Card: $3.99 for the pack of cards it came in.

Set it’s from: 2008 Upper Deck Series one

What it’s Worth: I would consider it a common and last year’s Upper Deck Game Jersey cards run about $8.00 according to Beckett. It is listed on eBay and is going for $0.99 consistently.

Why I like this card: It’s Jason Bay man, who doesn’t like him. The best part about this card is the thing he is doing with his tongue. What’s up with that? You would think that Upper Deck would come up with a better photograph for Jason. You know they give a few of these to give out to their family members. Do you think he was too embarrassed to hand these out? Do think think he got the stack of cards and started to sit down to mail them out took one look of it and called him mom:

Jason: Hi mom what’s up?

Mom: Jason, you make your dad and I so proud! So did your new relic cards come in? I need to add it to my collage!

Jason: Yeah, ummm, about the card . . .

Mom: That’s great, when are you going to send it over to me?

Jason: Mom, ummm, Upper Deck decided to drop me from the product line this year.

Mom: Are you kidding? You’ve had like 10 of these in the past year alone. What happened?

Jason: Yeah they decided I didn’t cut it this year.

Mom: Don’t they know your my special little guy?

Jason: I don’t think they do mom.

Mom: So how about your Topps relic then?

Jason: (looking at it) It’s on the way mom.

Why it’s a Bad Hit: Jason Bay is one of the most exciting young players in baseball right now. In just 4 years he has hit over 100 home runs. He is the anchor of the Pirates and if he played in a big market he would be worth lot’s of money. But that’s the problem with this hobby. He wasn’t hyped enough as a rookie, so no matter how ell he does he will always be relegated to the semi stars category. The card market has tons of game used cards, his are at the bottom of the ladder in popularity. Not for me mind you, I love this card, but for others, who don’t understand how good he is . . . it’s an undesirable card only worth about a buck.

Will it Ever be Worth Anything More than an Unlisted Star Common?: He would have to really start cranking up the home runs, being everyone likes the long ball. With A-Rod, Fielder, Howard and Pujols around who has time for Bay? I think he’ll be relegated to the commons box for a while.

  1. His power was WAY down in 2007…so I think his stock fell quite a bit.

On the card….it’s a nice card but what a horrible photograph. Upper Deck should not use photos of players checking their swing!

  2. His power numbers are down, yes, but not way down. His average though, that is definitely a cause for concern.

  3. Sorry, when you are a 30+ home run guy and you barely crack 20, that is extreme to me. I am a fan, though. I have a ton of his cards, not hits though. Nice pull! Keep em coming!

  4. Agreed on the checked swing comment. I especially like the 2008 UD Series 1 jersey card featuring Chone Figgins bunting.
